So it should not surprise you in the slightest that yet another review I’m submitting is about an up-and-coming artist that should be on your watchlist for the music scene. Introducing you to my latest find from the big city of LA, I give you the band, Lake Rana. This group only entered the scene last year, and I already predict that they’re going far. From their influences of Fall Out Boy and Origami Angel, I think they’ll be a big hit, especially if you like either of those artists. Then, maybe you should check them out.
They just dropped their debut album called Funeral For A Fish. This album is about everything one could expect from a pop punk band: catchy, yet angry, and also relatable. The band writes about everyday emotional pain, whiplash with a side of dark humor, as they lean into the title of this masterpiece. According to the band, the title came from a joke about it becoming a passion for aquarium life and how many fish they’ve killed in their lifetime while learning about how to keep them alive.
The main purpose behind its name and what they hope their listeners will take away is about one's own mortality, because one day we will all become as insignificant as a pet goldfish that was flushed down the toilet. While it’s an incredibly bleak thought to imagine, there’s a poetic irony to it because we are not as important as we may believe, and the freeing feeling that pairs with that. It’s interesting to really think about that because there is some truth to that. Yes, sometimes we might think more about ourselves than we really should, but at the same time, we are all important to someone. To quote the band, “making existential dread feel strangely hopeful,” I think, is about as descriptive as one could get to really put this album in words.

Especially in the chorus lines for “you make me so angry,” and the way every word in that line is sung with a dramatic pause between each one. It feels very much like Fall Out Boy, State Champs, Real Friends, and the list just goes on. Life may be fleeting and as unceremoniously as a pet goldfish, but at least we have good music like Lake Rana to vibe along to. Go stream Funeral For A Fish.
