C2E2 2026 Review – A First-Time Dive Into Chicago’s Pop Culture Playground
For sixteen years now, the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, better known as C2E2, has stood as the Midwest’s premier celebration of all things pop culture. Held March 27–29, 2026, inside the sprawling South Building of McCormick Place, this year’s convention once again proved why it consistently draws between 85,000 and well over 100,000 fans annually. From comic books and cosplay to gaming, television, film, and beyond, C2E2 isn’t just an event; it’s an experience. And for someone attending for the very first time, it delivered in ways that were both overwhelming and unforgettable.

The convention floor stretches farther than the eye can see, filled wall-to-wall with vendors, artists, displays, and fans from every corner of fandom. Yet despite its size, there’s a certain organized chaos to it all. It’s busy, loud, colorful, and at times a bit overwhelming, but that’s part of the magic.
Getting there early turned out to be one of the smartest decisions of the weekend. Parking in Lot C at McCormick Place ran $27, which, by Chicago standards, felt surprisingly reasonable. More importantly, arriving ahead of the crowds helped avoid the long lines and gave a chance to take in the convention at a more manageable pace, something any first-time attendee would be wise to consider. Because once those doors fully open and the crowds flood in, C2E2 quickly becomes a high-energy sea of people, costumes, and excitement.
At its core, C2E2 is a celebration of fandom in every form imaginable. Whether you’re into comic books, anime, video games, movies, or collectibles, there’s something here for you. The show floor alone is worth the price of admission. Vendors line the aisles with everything from rare comics and exclusive merchandise to handcrafted art and collectibles you won’t find anywhere else. And yes, there are mystery boxes. Lots of them. For anyone with a weakness for surprises, those mystery boxes are hard to resist. Packed with T-shirts, hats, figures, and other pop culture goodies, they offer that irresistible thrill of not knowing what you’re going to get. It’s the kind of thing that can pull you in quickly, and before you know it, you’re walking away with a bag full of surprises and a smile on your face.
One of the true highlights of C2E2, though, is Artist Alley. This section of the convention feels like stepping into the heart of creativity. Rows upon rows of talented artists, writers, and independent creators showcase their work, offering fans a chance to not only purchase unique pieces but also connect directly with the people behind them. It’s easy to lose track of time here. Every table tells a story, every booth offers something new, and the level of talent on display is nothing short of incredible. For many, this is where the soul of C2E2 truly lives.
Then there’s the celebrity presence, which adds another layer to the experience. Panels, photo opportunities, and autograph sessions give fans the chance to connect with some of their favorite stars. One standout moment was sitting in on a panel featuring The West Wing’s Martin Sheen and Dulé Hill. Hearing them reflect on their time on the show, sharing behind-the-scenes stories, and engaging with fans brought a different kind of energy to the weekend, one that balanced nostalgia with genuine appreciation for storytelling.
But if there’s one element that defines the visual identity of C2E2, it’s cosplay.
Everywhere you look, there are fans fully immersed in character, bringing their favorite heroes, villains, and icons to life. From incredibly detailed, screen-accurate costumes to creative and humorous interpretations, the level of effort and passion on display is astounding. Thousands of cosplayers filled the convention floor, turning every corner into a photo opportunity. Among the many standout moments was spotting a Chicago classic, Bozo the Clown, reimagined in cosplay form, a perfect blend of local culture and convention creativity.
Cosplay Central serves as the hub for all things costume-related, offering everything from meetups to repair stations. A particularly impressive feature was the cosplay repair booth run by DePaul University’s theater school. It’s a small detail, but one that speaks volumes about the community aspect of C2E2, helping fellow fans keep their creations intact and looking their best throughout the weekend.
And then there’s the Crown Championships of Cosplay, often billed as the largest and most prestigious cosplay competition in the world. While even catching glimpses of this level of craftsmanship is impressive, it reinforces just how serious and respected the art of cosplay has become within the convention scene.
Beyond cosplay and comics, C2E2 offers experiences that you might not expect. The LARPing (Live Action Role Playing) area, for instance, provided a fascinating look into another corner of fandom. Watching participants engage in live-action swordplay and role-based storytelling added a theatrical element to the event, almost like stepping into a fantasy world unfolding in real time.
And of course, no pop culture convention would be complete without a strong presence from one of the most beloved franchises of all time, Star Wars. From costumes and collectibles to themed displays, the galaxy far, far away was alive and well throughout the convention, drawing fans of all ages into its orbit. What makes C2E2 truly special, though, isn’t just the attractions; it’s the feeling. There’s an undeniable sense of community that runs through the entire event. Everyone is there because they love something deeply, and that shared passion creates an atmosphere that’s both welcoming and electric. Whether you’re a lifelong comic book collector, a casual movie fan, or someone just stepping into this world for the first time, you’re instantly part of something bigger.

And that’s what makes it so compelling. It’s not just about what you see, it’s about what you experience. By the end of the day, one thing became clear: you simply can’t see everything C2E2 has to offer in a single visit. You can walk for hours and still feel like you’ve only scratched the surface. Every aisle holds something new, every turn offers a different experience, and every moment feels packed with energy. C2E2 2026 wasn’t just a first visit, but it was the start of a new tradition. For a first timer, it delivered excitement, creativity, and a deeper appreciation for the vast world of pop culture. And while the convention will return to Chicago April 30–May 2, 2027, the impact of this year’s experience will last far longer. If this was any indication, the biggest pop culture convention in the Midwest isn’t just worth attending, it’s something you don’t want to miss.
