Lainey Wilson’s Whirlwind Tour Blows Through Rosemont
One of the most coveted tickets of the year belonged to Lainey Wilson’s Whirlwind Tour, and after seeing the show in Rosemont, it’s easy to understand why. Lainey had a whirlwind of a year, getting engaged to longtime boyfriend Devlin Hodges, touring Europe in March, dropping her Whirlwind Deluxe album in August, and now continuing her U.S. tour through November. But before Lainey even took the stage, the energy was already electric thanks to her all-star opening acts.

Maddox Batson, a Gen Z rising star who first gained traction on TikTok, kicked off the night. And yes—if you want to feel ancient, just Google his age. The kid’s playing arena shows before he’s even legally allowed to drive. Maddox performed his latest single, “Coincidence,” and showcased his guitar chops on “It Was You,” a track from his debut EP First Dance. He also made his Grand Ole Opry debut this year, and based on his stage presence, confidence, and charisma, you'd think he’s been doing this for decades. I was still terrified to read aloud in class at his age. Meanwhile, he’s commanding a stage like a seasoned pro.

Next up: Muscadine Bloodline, the Southern duo of Charlie Muncaster and Gary Stanton. I’d heard great things over the years, but nothing prepared me for how electric they are. Hailing from Alabama, they brought a high-energy, roots-rocking set full of southern grit and undeniable charm. Even if you didn’t grow up on country roads, their music hits home in all the right ways. Standout moments included the Charlie Daniels Band-inspired “Devil Died in Dixie,” crowd favorite “Rattlesnake Ridge,” and my personal favorite of the night, “Me on You.” They recently released a vinyl-only record that sold out immediately which is proof that their fan base is loyal and growing. You can bet I’ll be seeing them again when they hit Joe’s on Weed Street.
Lainey Wilson hit the stage in a stunning brown leather outfit, complete with her signature cowboy hat and fringe, and opened with a fierce performance of “Whirlwind” followed by “Hold My Halo.” Her spins, high kicks, and all set the tone for the rest of the night. Maddox Batson returned to join her for “Good Horses,” originally recorded with Miranda Lambert. Lainey’s stage production has definitely leveled up since last year. The stage had giant horseshoe screens, elevated platforms, and ceiling light fixtures which gave the show an immersive, cinematic vibe. At one point, she was lifted into the air on a platform during “Somewhere Over Laredo,” with a cape flying dramatically behind her. It was nothing short of epic.
The night was full of heartfelt moments. One of which came during “Counting Chickens,” when the band joined her center stage for a stripped-down, campfire-style session under twinkling lights. She brought Muscadine Bloodline back out for “Pieces,” a song they co-wrote with Wilson. Couples swayed to the sweet sounds of “4X4XU,” and the night came to an unforgettable close with her smash hit “Heart Like a Truck,” though I could barely hear her over the chorus of little girls behind me screaming every word.
Lainey deserves every bit of recognition she’s getting—and then some. I’ve seen Luke Combs, Cojo, Wallen, and Kelsea live, and none of them are doing what Lainey is doing right now. She dances her butt off—literally—while delivering powerhouse vocals, playing instruments, and radiating a warmth that fills every inch of the arena. That’s not something you can fake, and it’s not something every artist can pull off. Just give her the award already.
